2020 FIBA U17 World Cup Schedule

FIBA today conducted the draw for the 2020 FIBA U17 World Cup that will be played July 4-12 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the USA was placed into Group D, along with, Mali, Russia and either Japan or New Zealand.

The USA will take on Mali on July 4, Japan or New Zealand on July 5 and Russia on July 7. Game times are still to be determined.

Following the cancellation of the FIBA U16 Asia Championship, the qualification of the FIBA Asia/Oceania teams was based on the FIBA World Ranking Youth Men, presented by Nike, with Australia, China and Korea claiming berths as the three best-ranked countries. As Japan and New Zealand have an identical number of points in the ranking, the fourth team from the region will be decided by games between the two, played at a neutral venue on a date between now and the start of the World Cup.

Playing in Group A will be Australia, Canada, Egypt and Italy; Group B features Bulgaria, China, Dominican Republic and France; and Group C includes Argentina, South Korea, Spain and Turkey.

Following the preliminary round, all teams will advance to the round of 16 on July 8. Round of 16 winners will play in the quarterfinals on July 10, the semifinals will be played on July 11 and the finals on July 12.

The USA, which qualified for the 2020 U17 World Cup by finishing 6-0 at the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, are a flawless 37-0 all-time in FIBA U17 World Cups and have won all five gold medals (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018) since the inaugural event in 2010.

Training camp to select the 12-member USA Basketball Men's U17 World Cup Team will be June 19-22 at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Players eligible for this team must be U.S. citizens born on or after Jan. 1, 2003.

The 12-member roster is expected to be announced on June 22, and the team members will remain in Colorado Springs for team training, prior to departing for the competition.
