EVENT DESCRIPTION | First held in 2010, the FIBA U17 World Cup features the world’s top 17-year-old and younger players. FIBA holds U17 World Cups every two years. The USA earned its qualifying spot for the U17 worlds by capturing gold at the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championship with a 6-0 record. |
ELIGIBILITY: | Athletes eligible for this team must be 17 years old or younger (born on or after 1/1/03) and U.S. citizens. |
2020 QUALIFIED TEAMS (16): | In addition to host Bulgaria, nations qualified for the 2020 FIBA U17 World Cup include: Egypt and Mali from FIBA Africa; Argentina, Canada, Dominican Republic and the United States from FIBA Americas; Australia, China, New Zealand and Philippines from FIBA Asia/Oceania; and France, Italy, Russia, Spain and Turkey from FIBA Europe. |
PRELIMINARY ROUND GROUPS: | Group A: Australia, Canada, Egypt, Italy Group B: Bulgaria, China, Dominican Republic, France Group C: Argentina, South Korea, Spain, Turkey Group D: Mali, Russia, USA and either Japan or New Zealand |
USA EVENT HISTORY: | In 2010, the inaugural FIBA U17 World Cup for Men, the USA captured gold with a perfect 8-0 record, and Brad Beal was tabbed MVP. In 2012, Jahlil Okafor earned MVP honors and was joined on the all-tournament team by Justise Winslow as the U.S. again captured gold. In 2014, the U.S. claimed gold as Malik Newman earned tournament MVP honors and Diamond Stone listed on the all-tournament team. In 2016, MVP Collin Sexton came off the bench to lead the USA to gold and earn MVP honors, while Wendell Carter Jr. was named all-tournament. In the most recent edition, Jalen Green was tabbed MVP and Vernon Carey Jr. joined him on the all-tournament team as the USA again claimed gold. |
