U.S. OLYMPIC HISTORY: |
Owning a 66-03 overall win-loss record and riding a 49-game Olympic winning streak, the USA in 2021 will look to claim a seventh-straight Olympic gold medal. That feat has been accomplished by only one other traditional team sport in history: the USA men won seven-consecutive Olympic basketball gold medals from 1972-1968. In all, the USA women have earned eight gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal in the 10 Olympic women's basketball competitions in which the U.S. has competed. |
U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM PLAYERS OF NOTE: |
The USA boasts the most decorated women's basketball players in the history of the Olympic Games, including five-time Olympian Teresa Edwards, who claimed four gold medals and one bronze medal during her storied career. Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Lisa Leslie and Diana Taurasi claimed four Olympic golds apiece, with Bird and Taurasi hoping to earn a fifth this summer in Tokyo. Additionally, Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles, both of whom are current members of the USA National Team, as well as Anne Donovan, Katrina McClain, Katie Smith, current USA head coach Dawn Staley and Sheryl Swoopes competed in three Olympic Games apiece. |
