Thirty Schools in the 2021 Men's NCAA Tournament Have USA Basketball Ties

Of the 68 schools represented in the 2021 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, 30 have roster ties to USA Basketball teams. Check your knowledge and see below who has been involved with USA Basketball as either a player or coach over the years.

Arkansas

  • Connor Vanover was a member of the 2015 USA U16 National Team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 5-0 record at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Bahia Blanca, Argentina; he played in four games and averaged 3.8 ppg., 3.8 rpg. and 1.2 bpg.

Colorado

  • D’Shawn Schwartz listed as one of 18 finalists for the 2016 USA U17 World Cup Team, he was part of the 2016 USA Basketball Developmental National Team Program. He also helped his team to a runner-up finish at the 2016 USA Men’s 3x3 U18 National Tournament.
  • CU head coach Tad Boyle assisted on a pair of bronze medal-winning USA Basketball teams. He assisted the 2015 U.S. Pan American Games team to a 3-2 slate and the 2017 USA U19 World Cup Team to a 6-1 record.

Connecticut

  • UConn head coach Dan Hurley while attending St. Anthony's H.S. (NJ) played for the silver medalist East team at the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival.

Florida

  • Scottie Lewis was a member of the 2019 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team and scored 9 points in the USA's 93-87 win over the World Select Team on April 12 in Portland, Oregon.

Florida State

  • Scottie Barnes earned gold medals at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup, 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup and 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. He also was named to the 2020 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team; however, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has played in 22 games in a USA Basketball uniform and helped the USA to a perfect 22-0 slate while averaging 9.0 ppg., 7.9 rpg. and 2.0 apg.
  • M.J. Walker was a member of the 2017 USA squad that earned a 98-87 victory in the 2017 Nike Hoop Summit. He also was a member of the 2016 USA U18 National Team that rolled to gold with a perfect 5-0 record at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Valdivia, Chile, which qualified the USA for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup.

Georgetown

  • Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who also collected gold at the 1992 Tournament of the Americas. He is one of just 22 American men to have competed on at least two Olympic teams, having done so in 1984 and as a member of the 1992 Dream Team, which collectively garnered the 1992 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year award.

Gonzaga

  • Jalen Suggs earned gold medals at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup, 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup and 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. He also was named to the 2020 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team; however, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has played in 22 games in a USA Basketball uniform, to include exhibition contests, and helped the USA to a perfect 22-0 slate while averaging 9.0 ppg., 2.6 rpg., 2.0 apg. and 2.4 spg.
  • Gonzaga head coach Mark Few was an assistant for the 2012 USA U18 National Team that captured the gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship and served as the head coach for the 2015 U.S. Pan American Games Team that finished with the bronze medal.

Grand Canyon

  • Grand Canyon head coach Bryce Drew as an athlete helped lead the 1997 USA World University Games Team to a perfect 6-0 record and the gold medal in Sicily, Italy. He was the team’s fourth-leading scorer (8.2 ppg.).

Houston

  • Quentin Grimes was MVP and an all-tournament selection after leading the 2018 USA U18 National Team to a perfect 6-0 record and gold medal at the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. He started all six games and averaged 14.7 ppg., 4.0 rpg. and 3.8 apg. Earlier that year, Grimes was a member of the USA squad that competed in the 2018 Nike Hoop Summit and despite a 15-point, 6-rebound performance from Grimes, the USA fell to the World Team 89-76.
  • While he hasn’t played for USA Basketball, Marcus Sasser’s uncle Jason Sasser was a member of the historic 1998 USA Basketball World Cup Team that had a remarkable run to the FIBA World Cup medal stand. Written off at the start due to being a collection of players not from the NBA, but from overseas professional leagues, the CBA or in college, the U.S. went 7-2, both losses were by two points each, and captured the bronze medal.
  • Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson has been a part of five USA Basketball staffs, the most recent of which was as head coach of the 2004 USA World Cup for Young Men Qualifying Team (U20), which recorded a 5-0 record, earned the gold medal and qualified for the 2005 FIBA U21 World Cup. He also served as head coach for the 1994 USA Goodwill Games Team (3-2, bronze medal), 1995 U19 World Cup Team (4-4, seventh place) and the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival West Team (2-2, silver medal). As an assistant coach, Sampson was on the sideline for the 2002 USA World Cup Team that finished with a 6-3 mark and in sixth place. In all, his USA Basketball record is 20-11 (.645).

Illinois

  • Ayo Dosunmu was a member of the 2018 USA Men’s U18 National Team that posted a 6-0 record and collected the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men gold medal and averaged 9.5 ppg. and a team-high 4.5 apg.
  • Adam Miller was named to the 2020 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team, however, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Iowa

  • Pat McCaffery, the 2018 USA 3x3 U18 National Championship MVP, was a member of the 2018 U.S. Youth Olympic Games Team that went 2-2 and finished in 10th place at the 2018 Youth Olympics. He also participated in the 2018 USA U18 National Team trials and took part in the 2018 NCAA Next Generation Sunday at the NCAA Men’s Final Four.

Kansas

  • David McCormack was a member of the 2018 USA team that fell to the World Select Team 89-76 in the annual Nike Hoop Summit.
  • Kansas head coach Bill Self served as head coach for the 2018 USA U18 National Team that rolled to a 6-0 record and the gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship.

Liberty

  • Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay was an assistant coach for the 1997 USA World University Games Team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 6-0 record.

Louisiana State

  • Javonte Smart helped lead the USA to a gold medal at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and averaged 6.8 ppg. and 4.2 rpg. as the USA earned a perfect 5-0 mark.

Maryland

  • Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon served as a court coach at the 2015 USA Pan American Games Team training camp and returned as an assistant coach and helped the 2016 USA U18 National Team to gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship and a berth in the 2017 FIBA U17 World Cup.

Michigan

  • Michigan head coach Juwan Howard competed on the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival West Team that finished with a 1-3 record and in fourth place. Assistant coach Phil Martelli was a coach for three USA Basketball teams. He was head coach for the 2005 USA U21 World Cup Team that finished with a 7-1 slate and in fifth place. Ahead of the FIBA U21 World Cup, Martelli led the USA squad to a 4-0 record and first place in an exhibition tournament. As an assistant coach, Martelli aided the 1998 USA Goodwill Games and 2001 USA U21 World Cup teams to golds. In all, Martelli’s record with USA Basketball is 23-2 (.920).

Michigan State

  • Joshua Langford was a member of the 2016 USA Junior National Select Team that defeated the World Select Team 101-67 in the 19th annual Nike Hoop Summit. He contributed 5 points and 4 rebounds.
  • Rocket Watts was on the 2018 USA U18 National Team that posted a 6-0 record and collected the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship gold medal and averaged 6.8 ppg. and 2.5 apg. He also took part in the 2018 NCAA Next Generation Sunday at the NCAA Men’s Final Four.
  • Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo was an assistant coach for the gold medal-winning 2001 USA Goodwill Games Team that went 5-0, and head coach for the 2003 U.S. Pan American Games Team that finished in fourth place with a 2-3 record.

Missouri

  • Mizzou head coach Cuonzo Martin was an assistant coach for the 2011 USA World University Games Team that finished in fifth place with a 7-1 record.

North Carolina

  • Armando Bacot was a member of the 2018 USA U18 National Team that posted a 6-0 record and collected the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men gold medal; averaged 7.8 ppg and 5.0 rpg. He also took part in the 2018 NCAA Next Generation Sunday at the NCAA Men’s Final Four.
  • Walker Kessler, Caleb Love and Day’Ron Sharpe were named to the 2020 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team, however, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • UNC head coach Roy Williams was a member of five different USA coaching staffs from 1991-2004. He assisted the 1991 USA World University Games Team to gold, was an assistant for the 1992 USA Developmental Team that scrimmaged the Dream Team, headed up the 1993 USA World Championship for Young Men Qualifying Team (U20) that claimed the silver medal and was an assistant to the USA National Team from 2003-04 and helped lead the USA to gold at the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament and bronze at the 2004 Olympic Games. In all, his USA Basketball coaching record is 33-5 (.868).
  • Tar Heels assistant coach Hubert Davis paced the USA to a gold medal at the 1991 World University Games with 17.8 ppg. as the USA rolled to a dominating 6-0 record, averaging 103.2 ppg. to its opponents’s 63.8 ppg.

Oklahoma

  • De’Vion Harmon helped the USA capture gold medals at the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup. As a member of the 2018 USA U17 World Cup Team, he started in all seven games and averaged a team second-best 13.1 ppg. to with a team-high 3.4 apg. On the 2017 USA U16 National Team at the FIBA U16 Americas Championship, he averaged a USA second-best 11.8 ppg. He also helped the USA to a 93-87 win in the 2019 Nike Hoop Summit.
  • Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger was a member of four different USA Basketball coaching staffs in the 1990s. As head coach, he led the 1990 U.S. Olympic Festival North Team to a silver medal and piloted the 1991 USA U19 World Cup and 1995 USA World University Games teams to gold medals. As an assistant for the historic 1998 USA World Cup team that was written off from the start, Kruger helped the USA to a bronze medal finish and a 7-2 record. And the USA’s two losses were by just two points apiece.
  • OU assistant coach Jim Molinari was an assistant on Kruger’s staff for the 1991 USA U19 World Cup Team that collected gold and in 1997 he served as head coach for the gold medal-winning USA World University Games Team.

Oklahoma State

  • Cade Cunningham helped lead the USA to gold at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup, where he averaged 11.7 ppg. and 5.7 apg., and he was named to the 2020 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team before the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Isaac Likekele was teammates with Cunningham on the 2019 USA U19 World Cup Team, and averaged 8.4 ppg., 5.9 rpg. and 3.1 apg.

Purdue

  • Purdue head coach Matt Painter was an assistant coach for the 2009 USA U19 World Cup gold medal-winning team and as head coach, his 2011 USA World University Games Team fell in the quarterfinals and finished with a 7-1 record and in fifth place.

Southern California

  • Evan Mobley was named to the 2020 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team, however, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, Mobley earned a pair of gold medals at the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup and 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup.

Syracuse

  • Syracuse head mentor Jim Boeheim has coached numerous teams from 1982-2016, most notably as an assistant coach for the USA National Team from 2006-16. During that period, the USA National Team compiled an 88-1 overall record, won three Olympic gold medals, two FIBA Basketball World Cup gold medals, 2006 FIBA World Cup bronze and the 2007 Tournament of the Americas gold medal. Additionally, Boeheim has earned both of USA Basketball’s annual coaching honors, having received the 1998 USA Development and 2001 USA National Coach of the Year awards. He owns an all-time USA Basketball coaching record of 124-8 (.939) and has aided teams to nine gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals.

Texas

  • Matt Coleman was a member of the 2016 USA U18 National Team that rolled to gold with a perfect 5-0 record at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. He started all five games and averaged 7.8 ppg. and 4.4 apg.
  • Kamaka Hepa also claimed gold at a FIBA Americas U18 Championship, his came in 2018 when he helped the USA to a 6-0 record and averaged 3.3 ppg. and 5.0 rpg.
  • Head coach Shaka Smart was a member of three USA Basketball staffs and helped pilot teams to three gold medals and a 19-0 record. He first two assignments were as an assistant coach for the 2012 USA U18 National Team and 2013 USA U19 World Cup Team, and he also steered a USA U18 squad to gold as head coach at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship.

UC Santa Barbara

  • Devearl Ramsey earned gold medals in back-to-back summers. He was a member of the 2013 USA U16 squad that went 5-0 en route to the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and returned to help the USA to a 7-0 slate at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Cup.

UCLA

  • Jalen Hill was a member of the 2015 USA U16 National Team that captured the gold medal with a 5-0 record at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship where he averaged 8.6 ppg. and 5.0 rpg.

Villanova

  • Justin Moore was named to the USA Nike Hoop Summit Team on Feb. 14, 2019; played five minutes in the 2019 Nike Hoop Summit and helped the USA to a 93-87 win over the World Select Team on April 12 in Portland, Oregon.
  • Jeremiah Robinson-Earl has been part of three USA Basketball teams and was also a member of the 2016 USA Basketball Junior National Team Program. As a starter for the gold medalist USA U19 World Cup Team, Robinson-Earl averaged a team-second best 12.7 ppg. and 6.3 rpg. He was was named to the 2019 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team and recorded 4 points and 4 rebounds to help the USA to a 93-87 win over the World Select Team on April 12 in Portland, Oregon. He was also participating in was a member of the 2018 USA Men’s U18 National Team that posted a 6-0 record and collected the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship gold medal; he started all six games and averaged 10.7 ppg. and a team-leading 8.5 rpg.
  • Cole Swider was a member of the 2018 USA Junior National Select Team that fell to the World Select Team 89-76 in the 2018 Nike Hoop Summit; scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
  • Villanova head coach Jay Wright has served six coaching stints with USA Basketball, most recently as an assistant coach to Gregg Popovich and the 2019 USA World Cup Team and will return this summer as an assistant for the U.S. Olympic Team. Wright has compiled a 24-6 overall USA Basketball record for a .800 winning percentage. He led the USA to an 8-0 record and gold medal at the 2005 World University Games as head coach, and he was an assistant coach in the 2000 World Championship for Young Men Qualifying Tournament (U20) that finished 4-1 and won the silver medal. Wright coached a USA Basketball team of collegians in the 2007 Pan American Games to a fifth-place finish and a 3–2 record. Serving as co-head coach of 2010 USA Select Team that trained with the 2010 USA World Cup Team, he returned as an assistant coach for the 2016 USA Select Team that trained with the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team. Wright also served as an assistant coach during the 2018 USA National Team minicamp.

Virginia

  • Carson McCorkle was a member of the 2018 U.S. Youth Olympic Games Team that went 2-2 and finished in 10th place at the 2018 Youth Olympics. He also claimed the 2018 USA 3x3 U18 National Championship crown.
  • UVA head coach Tony Bennett was an assistant coach for the gold medal-winning 2013 USA U19 World Cup Team that earned a perfect 9-0 record. While playing at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Bennett played on two USA Basketball teams. As a member of the 1991 USA Pan American Games Teams that won the bronze medal, he averaged 6.1 ppg. and a team-high 3.3 apg. He also played in the 1989 U.S. Olympic Festival for the North squad and helped lead the team to a gold medal finish.

West Virginia

  • WVU head coach Bob Huggins was an assistant coach for the 1993 USA World University Games Team that posted a 7-0 record en route to gold, and he served as an assistant for the 2000 USA Select Team that played an exhibition game against the USA Men’s National Team ahead of the Sydney Olympics.
