USA Basketball Men’s 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Team to Gather for Training Camp
The 2021 USA Basketball Men’s 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Team, including Canyon Barry (Iowa Wolves/Florida/Colorado Springs, Colo.), Robbie Hummel (Purdue/Valparaiso, Ind.), Dominique Jones (Fort Hays State/Harlem, N.Y.) and Kareem Maddox (Princeton/Los Angeles, Calif.), will train March 12-18 in Orlando, Florida, in preparation for the 2021 FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament that will be played May 26-30 in Graz, Austria. Olympic berths will go to the top three finishing teams at that event.
Due to COVID-19, media members will not be permitted to attend.
To help provide competition for the U.S. team members, 3x3 experienced players Zahir Carrington (Lehigh/Philadelphia, Pa.), Damon Huffman (Brown/Petoskey, Mich.), Joey King (Minnesota/Eagan, Minn.) and Craig Moore (Northwestern/Doylestown, Pa.) also will participate in training camp.
In its Tokyo Olympic debut 3x3 basketball will feature eight men’s and eight women’s teams from July 24-28.
Four men’s and four women’s teams already are qualified for the Tokyo Olympic 3x3 competition. Those teams earned berths in November 2019 based on point totals from FIBA 3x3 competitions. Already into the Olympics on the men’s side are host Japan, China, Russia and Serbia, and for the women already qualified are China, Mongolia, Romania and Russia.
The eighth-and-final Olympic 3x3 berths will go to the men’s and women’s winner at the FIBA 3x3 Universality Qualifying Tournament from June 4-6 in Debrecen, Hungary. That tournament will include six men’s and six women’s national teams from countries that did not have a basketball team at the 2012 or 2016 Olympic Games.
The USA Women’ 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Team, which also will compete May 26-30 in Austria, includes Stefanie Dolson (Chicago Sky/ Connecticut/ Port Jervis, N.Y.), Allisha Gray (Dallas Wings/South Carolina/Sandersville, Ga.), Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces/Washington/Poway, Calif.) and Katie Lou Samuelson (Seattle Storm/ Connecticut/Huntington Beach, Calif.).
