USA 3x3 Men’s & Women’s National Teams to Play in Big Twelve International in France

  • Date:
    May 20, 2021

In their final tune-ups before the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament that will be played May 26-30 in Graz, Austria, the USA 3x3 Men’s and Women’s National Teams will take part in the Big Twelve International 3x3 Tournament from May 21-23 in Voiron, France.

The USA 3x3 Men’s National Team, which includes Canyon Barry (Iowa Wolves/Florida/Colorado Springs, Colo.), Robbie Hummel (Purdue/Valparaiso, Ind.), Dominique Jones (Fort Hays State/Harlem, N.Y.) and Kareem Maddox (Princeton/Los Angeles, Calif.), will compete along with teams from Dominican Republic, France, Hungary, Israel, Qatar, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine.

Joey King (Minnesota/Eagan, Minn.) will join the U.S. men as an alternate. King most recently attended the USA’s May training camp in Los Angeles as a member of a USA Select Team, he finished in second place with his team at the 2018 USA Basketball 3x3 National Championships and also competed in the 2019 Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals, along with taking part in the USA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying training camp in Chicago in February 2020.

“This tournament will be another building block for us to see where we are at,” Jones said. “It will be a chance for us to continue working on our cohesiveness while playing against international teams.”

The USA 3x3 Women’s National Team, which features Stefanie Dolson (Chicago Sky/Connecticut/Port Jervis, N.Y.); Allisha Gray (Dallas Wings/South Carolina/Sandersville, Ga.); Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces/Washington/Poway, Calif.) and Katie Lou Samuelson (Seattle Storm/Connecticut/Huntington Beach, Calif.), will join teams from France, Holland, Israel, Mongolia, Switzerland, Ukraine and other teams still to be confirmed for the event.

Joining the USA women for the Big Twelve tournament will be 6-foot-3 University of Louisville standout Olivia Cochran (Columbus, Ga.). Cochran was MVP at the 2019 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup, where she helped the USA to a gold medal, and she and her TGB teammates won the title at the 2019 USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championship.

“These teams we are about to play at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, they have been playing together and training for years,” Plum said. “We’ve had training camps, but this tournament in France will give us a chance to build even more chemistry before the real tournament starts.”

The USA teams will depart from the tournament to the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Graz, Austria, where the top three finishing men’s and three women’s teams will qualify for the inaugural Tokyo Olympic Games 3x3 competition.

2021 FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament

The USA men, who are competing in preliminary round Pool B at the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, will play Lithuania and South Korea on May 27. On May 29, the U.S. men will play two final preliminary round games, facing Kazakhstan and Belgium.

The USA women, who are in preliminary round Pool A, will take the court on May 27 and will face Indonesia and France. On May 29, the U.S. women will close out preliminary round play against Germany and Uruguay.

For both the men’s and women’s tournament, the top two finishing teams from each preliminary round pool will advance to the quarterfinals on May 30, and the quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals. The three Olympic berths for each gender will go to the two semifinal winning teams and the third-place finisher.

Tokyo Olympic 3x3

In its Tokyo Olympic debut 3x3 basketball will feature eight men’s and eight women’s teams competing from July 24-28.

Already qualified for the Tokyo Olympic 3x3 competition are four men’s and four women’s teams, including men’s teams China, Russia, Serbia and host Japan, and for the women: China, Mongolia, Romania and Russia. Those teams earned berths in November 2019 based on point totals from FIBA 3x3 competitions.

With three men’s and three women’s teams earning Olympic berths through the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament May 26-30 in Austria, the eighth-and-final Olympic 3x3 berths will go to the men’s and women’s winner at the FIBA 3x3 Universality Qualifying Tournament from June 4-6 in Debrecen, Hungary. That tournament will include six men’s and six women’s national teams from countries that did not have a basketball team at the 2012 or 2016 Olympic Games.
