Is This Harlem's or Princeton's Year?
On the men’s side, with three-time champion Ariel Slow & Steady not fielding a team,it's a wide-open competition.
Will the experienced Harlem team, led by USA 3x3 National Team member Dominique “Disco Domo” Jones, who is the No.1 ranked 3x3 men’s player in the U.S. Jones, have enough to get to the top of the medal podium? Jones will be joined by Marcel Esowune, Antoinne Morgano. Michael Poole who were all invited to the 2020 USA Basketball 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Team trials, and have the experience and chemistry to win the title.
But, don’t overlook perennial power Princeton. Also an experienced and accomplished team, Princeton is comprised of internationally proven 3x3 players. Led by 3x3 veteran Damon Huffman, who helped the USA win its first gold medal at the 2019 FIBA World Cup, the team also features sharpshooter Craig Moore, Pawel Buczak and Zahir Carrington. Like Harlem, all four Princeton players were part of the 2020 USA Basketball 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Team trials.
Stepfhon Hannah of 3BALL Chicago, was part of the 3 Ball Premiere team that claimed the 2016 3X Nationals title, and he was selected a member of the 2016 USA 3x3 World Cup Team that earned a silver medal and the USA’s first podium finish at the FIBA 3x3 Worlds.
Expect the Bronx team to be propelled by David Seager and Kidani Brutus, two 3x3 threats who participated in the 2020 USA Basketball 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Team trials.
And don’t sleep on Chris Staples, aka @everybody_hatechriss, and Team Slam. A world renowned dunker who competed in the 2017 FIBA 3x3 World Cup Dunk Contest – (check out his highlights athttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bETl_Ihg6RE) and a former contestant on The Bachelorette, Staples can get to the rim in a hurry. Teaming with Staples is 7-foot-6, 300-pound Mamadou Ndiaye, who played collegiately at UC Irvine and is the tallest known 3x3 player.
Can Oregon Three-peat? Lots of Challengers Looking to Win Women's 3X Nationals Title
Although all four members of Oregon’s women’s 3x3 championship team members from 2019 are gone, including two-time 3X Nationals MVP Sabrina Ionescu, who led Oregon to back-to-back women’s titles and went on to be the New York Liberty’s No. 1 draft pick, Oregon will shoot for a third-straight title behind the talents of Te-Hina Paopao, Sydney Parris, Maddie Scheer and Kylee Watson.
Force 10 boasts of the most 3x3 experience and will have its title hopes powered by former WNBA players Cierra Burduck, Alexis Peterson, Linnae Harper and Megan Huff. Burduck was part of the 2015 USA 3x3 World Cup Team and attended the 2020 USA Basketball 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament training camp in February 2020. In 2014, as part of Takeover, she won the title at the 2014 USA Basketball 3x3 National Championship, so getting the top of the podium is nothing new for her. Harper, likewise has played on the 3x3 international stage. She captured a bronze medal at the 2016 FIBA 3x3 World Cup after leading her team to the 2016 3X Nationals championship, and she was part of the 2011 USA 3x3 U18 World Cup Team that was awarded an honorary bronze medal. She too participated in the 2020 USA Basketball 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Team training camp.
Four other teams comprised of current collegians - Kansas State, Louisville, Maryland and NC State – will all be looking to add the 3X National Championship trophy to their school’s trophy case.
Maryland’s Katie Benzan, who in 2020-21 led the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage (.500 / 93-186 3pt FGs), likely will need her shooting eye to be focused if the Terps are to going to pursue the 3X National title. Louisville, led by ACC All-Tournament first team choice Kianni Smith, and featuring Elizabeth Dixon, Mykasa Robinson, and Payton Verhulst, are NCAA tested and ready to challenge for the title. Kansas State’s hopes may center around its balance and Rachel Ranke, who holds the school record for career 3-point field goals made by a player 6’0” or taller and is just the third player in program history with 1,000 career points, 300 career rebounds, 200 or more 3-point field goals made and 100 or more steals. And, NC State, after finishing fourth in the 2019 3X Nationals, will look to its four players, including Mississippi State transfer Madison Hayes, to quickly gel if a title is to be had.
