- USA Will Enter Quarterfinals as Group B's No. 1 Seed -
The USA (3-0) will not play Argentina (1-1) on June 15 as scheduled at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2021 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
“Following the Covid-19 Protocol for FIBA Official National Team and Club Competitions and the advice of its Medical Commission, FIBA has decided that both remaining games of Argentina at FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2021 will not take place,” FIBA said in a statement issued on June 15.
“Additional tests were performed yesterday and more members of the (Argentina) delegation were tested positive, and with the health and safety of players, coaches and officials being the primary consideration, the decision was made not to play Argentina games vs Venezuela and USA.”
The USA will enter the June 17 quarterfinals as the No. 1 seed from Group B, and will play the No. 4 seed from Group A, which will be the winner of today’s 12:10 p.m. EDT matchup between El Salvador (0-3) and U.S. Virgin Islands (0-3). The game time will be determined tonight following the conclusion of preliminary round games. All games are available live on ESPN+.
Having forfeited two games, and with positive tests, Argentina has been disqualified from the tournament, and their previous results have been nullified.
The top four teams from each preliminary pool advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played on June 17. The semifinals are on June 18, and the bronze and gold-medal games will be played on June 19.
The top four finishing teams at the AmeriCup will advance to compete in one of four 2022 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournaments, in hopes of earning one of the 12 spots in the 2022 FIBA World Cup.
