Training Camp Opens for USA Men’s U16 National Team

Twenty-Six Athletes Set for USA Men’s U16 Training Camp in Houston


Announcing the addition of three players for the 2021 USA Men’s U16 National Team training camp that will begin today, Aug. 13, in Houston, 26 athletes will now take part in the training camp that will be used to determine the official USA Men's U16 National Team roster.

The training camp attendees are competing for one of 12 spots on the USA team that will compete in the 2021 FIBA Americas U16 Championship that will be played Aug. 23-29 in Xalapa, Mexico. The team will be named prior to the team’s departure for the championship on Aug. 19.

Added to the training camp roster were 2023 athlete Jeremy Fears (La Lumiere School/Chicago, Ill.) and class of 2024 members Amier Ali (Montverde Academy, Fla./Columbus, Ohio) and Ian Jackson (Cardinal Hayes H.S./Bronx, N.Y.).

The roster includes 22 players who attended the USA Men’s Junior National Team minicamp this past May and four athletes who will be playing in their first USA Basketball experience. 

New to USA Basketball are Fears and Wesley Yates III (Beaumont United H.S./Beaumont, Texas) from the class of 2023, along with lass of 2024 members Naasir Cunningham (Gill St. Bernard's School/West Orange, N.J.) and Khani Rooths (Georgetown Preparatory School, Md./Washington, D.C.).

Also attending from the class of 2021 are: Kylan Boswell (Arizona Compass H.S./Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.); Jordan Butler (Christ Church Episcopal School/Mauldin, S.C.); Jacolb Cole (Bellaire H.S./Houston, Texas); Jaylen Curry (Vance H.S./Charlotte, N.C.); Robert Dillingham (Combine Academy/Hickory, N.C.); Dennis Evans(Hillcrest H.S./Riverside, Calif.); Ronald Holland (Duncanville H.S./Dallas, Texas); Jalen Lewis (Overtime Elite/Oakland, Calif.); Justin McBride (Oak Hill Academy, Va./Plano, Texas); and Jaylin Stewart (Garfield H.S./Kent, Wash.).

Additional attendees from the class of 2024 athletes are: James Brown (St. Rita H.S./Aurora, Ill.); Isaiah Elohim (Sierra Canyon H.S./North Hills, Calif.); Johnuel "Boogie" Fland (Archbishop Stepinac H.S./Bronx, N.Y.); Jahki Howard (Norcross H.S./Norcross, Ga.); Tre Johnson (Lake Highlands H.S./Garland, Texas); Ryan "RJ" Jones Jr. (The Rock School/Gainesville, Fla.); Liam McNeeley (John Paul II H.S./Richardson, Texas); James Moore(The Patrick School, N.J./Harrisburg, Pa.); Cameron Scott (Lexington H.S./Lexington, S.C.); and Bryson Tucker(Mount St. Joseph H.S./Bowie, Md.).

The 2021 USA U16 National Team is led by Sharman White (Pace Academy, Ga.), with assistant coaches Eric Flannery (St. Edward H.S., Ohio) and Steve Turner (Gonzaga College H.S., D.C.).

Serving as court coaches during training camp will be Dom Amorosa (Strake Jesuit H.S. Texas), Chet Mason (Brush H.S., Ohio) and Don Showalter (USA Basketball Youth & Sport Development coach director).

At the 2021 FIBA Americas U16 Championship the USA men will play in Group B and will meet Puerto Rico on Aug. 23, Dominican Republic on Aug. 24 and Chile on Aug. 25. Rounding out the field in Group A are Argentina, Brazil, Canada and host Mexico.

The USA men are 31-0 in FIBA Americas U16 Championship play and have won the gold medal in all six editions of the tournament since its debut in 2009.
