3BALL Minnesota and Back in Town Win Titles at Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Midwest Regional

  • Date:
    Sep 27, 2021

Punching their tickets to the 2022 Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals, men’s team 3BALL Minnesota (5-0) and women’s squad Back in Town (4-1) won tournament titles this past weekend at the Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Midwest Regional in Minneapolis.

By virtue of finishing in the top four at a regional qualifier, also earning a spot in the 2022 Red Bull 3X Nationals next spring were men’s teams O’City Cage, No Name Nashville and Team Bang NYC and women’s teams OldDogs, ChaskaHoops and MMIW.

Featuring Brensley Haywood, Kurtis Koenig, Paris Kyles and Joel Armstrong, 3BALL Minnesota won its two preliminary round games and then got a 21-18 win over Infinite in the quarterfinals.

3BALL Minnesota cruised through its semifinal with a 21-11 defeat of No Name Nashville, while the second semifinal saw O’City Cage defeat TeamBang NYC 22-13.

3BALL Minnesota and O’City Cage played a tight championship game, and 3BALL Minnesota earned the 21-19 final win.

Including Shaunna Knife, Shauna Long, Jenna Plumley and Andrea Riley, Back in Town, was edged out 21-20 by OldDogs in the final game of pool play, but that stumble did not derail the team. Back in Town defeated MMIW 22-8 in the first semifinal, and OldDogs nipped ChaskaHoops 21-20 in the second semifinal.

The women’s final was another close contest, but this time Back in Town came out on top 21-19.

The fast-paced 3x3 game is played under FIBA rules in a half-court setting with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock.

Play is continuous, as teams clear the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-point field goals, 1-point free throws or 2-pointers from behind the arc, is victorious; or if time expires, the leading team wins.

Two more Red Bull 3X Regionals are scheduled for this fall, and registration is open until tip off. The South regional will be Oct. 9 in Charlotte, and the West Regional is scheduled for Oct. 24 in Oakland.
