A mix of local legends, former college players and repeat Red Bull 3X winners went head-to-head at the Red Bull 3X Local Qualifier in Oakland on Saturday, Oct. 23m at Soldiertown Gym.

The women’s championship pitted local teams Iguodala Dolla Bill Y’all and Sharp Shooters in a tense match. As the game clock expired, it was Sharp Shooters who came out on top, defending its title with a final score of 14-11. Sharp Shooters featured Ethel Gonzales, Faatimah Amen-Ra A, Nnenna Okereke and Jazmine Jackson.

“We got some real hoopers out here in the Bay Area,” said Amen-Ra A, who is the director of the Western Basketball Conference, an Oakland league consisting of Catholic schools offering different levels of competition at grades 3 through high school. “It’s good that we’re able to have this platform so that all these ladies are able to display their talent.”

On the men’s side, it was a battle between Georgia Fire and DOA, with Georgia Fire prevailing in the title game with a final score of 17-15. This is a third Red Bull 3X Local Qualifier win for Georgia Fire, who claimed championships earlier this year in Memphis and Atlanta. The squad, which traveled from Atlanta, included Bernard "Paul" Parks, Joshua Montgomery, Devon Baulkman and Patrick Meyers.

“We started off a little slow,” said Montgomery. “We had our first loss in pool play, but we stayed locked in, played together and got it done.”

The top two men’s and women’s teams from the Oakland Local Qualifier advance to the Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Regional in Oakland, California on Sunday, Oct. 24. The teams also have a chance to play at the 2022 Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals, which will be used to evaluate members for USA 3x3 Men’s and Women’s National Teams.
