USA Basketball Selected to Host Women's 2022 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Games in Washington, D.C.

  • Date:
    Nov 18, 2021

FIBA today announced USA Basketball as a host for one of the four 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments that will be held Feb. 10-13, 2022. The USA will host and play in a four-team, round-robin tournament in Washington, D.C. The venue and ticket information will be announced at a later date.

Also named as hosts are Osaka, Japan, and Belgrade, Serbia, which will host two tournaments. A total of 16 nations will compete in the four tournaments, and the draw to determine the four teams for each tournament will be held Nov. 23.

The top three finishing teams in each of the four qualifying tournaments will advance to the 2022 World Cup, which will be held Sept 22-Oct 1 in Sydney, Australia.  Should the U.S. and/or Australia not finish among the top three teams in their respective tournaments, only the top two in those groups, plus the U.S. and/or Australia will advance to compete in the FIBA World Cup.

Australia, as host nation, and the USA, which secured its berth as 2020 Olympic gold medalist, have qualified for the 2022 FIBA World Cup, but will participate in the World Cup qualification process. The remaining 14 nations vying for a 2022 World Cup berth are: Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Japan, Mali, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Russia, Serbia and South Korea.

Nations qualified for the FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournaments based on their finishes in the 2021 zone championships, with the top two finishing teams from Africa, top four from the AmeriCup, top four from the Asia Cup and top six from the EuroBasket earning a spot in the 2022 qualifying tournaments.

The USA Basketball coaching staff and athletes who will compete in the 2022 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament will be announced at a later date.

Three-time defending FIBA World Cup champion, the USA has claimed a record 10 gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals, and owns a 109-21 record all-time in World Cup play since the event launched in 1953. In 2018, the most recent World Cup, the U.S. finished with a perfect 6-0 record and the gold medal behind tournament MVP Breanna Stewart.
