Renee Felton Named USA Basketball Head of Communications

  • Date:
    Dec 22, 2021

USA Basketball today announced Renee Felton, currently the media relations director for the Dallas Mavericks, has been named head of communications for USA Basketball. Felton succeeds Craig Miller, who recently announced his retirement after leading USA Basketball’s media/communications efforts since 1990. Felton officially will step into her new role on Feb. 1, 2022.

“I’m excited to have Renee join the USA Basketball staff,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO.  “Her versatile experience working in professional and collegiate basketball, the non-profit sector and with a national governing body will be a great asset to USA Basketball and our holistic communications efforts.”

Felton will serve as the organization’s spokesperson and primary liaison with national media, international media and basketball organizations, and she will oversee USA Basketball’s ongoing communications strategy, including media outreach and all media communications.

Felton, who has worked in professional, collegiate and Olympic athletics, joins USA Basketball having most recently served in the Mavericks basketball communications department. She also spent three years with the franchise as a basketball communications coordinator from 2007-10.

Prior to rejoining the Mavericks, she spent three years as a regional communications and marketing director with the American Red Cross, where she served on disaster relief operations in the wake of hurricanes Harvey and Florence, among other large-scale disasters. Felton oversaw communications and marketing for the organization’s North Texas Region, which executes the Red Cross mission in more than 120 North Texas counties.

From 2011-17, she served in various communications roles for U.S. Figure Skating. As the communications director for the national governing body, Felton was Figure Skating’s lead press officer at major international competitions including the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Boston.

She also served as media relations assistant at Texas State University and was a basketball communications coordinator for the New Orleans Hornets.

Felton, who grew up in Colorado, is a graduate of Regis University.
