Action in Australia and EuroLeauge With EuroCup Playoffs Ahead

The Australian WNBL, which tipped last week, has seen three games contested in this young season, which began on Dec. 4. In the first contest of the season, the Southside Flyers defeated Bendigo Spirit 94-83. The noteworthy game of the first weekend, however, featured a WNBA Player of the Week performance by Brittney Sykes, who contributed 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots in a 58-55 UC Capitals win over the Sydney Uni Flames. 

Despite receiving 12 points and three assists from Tiffany Mitchell and 16 points from Aussie Cayla George, the Melbourne Boomers fell to the Bendigo Spirit 63-58 on Dec. 8. 

EuroCup Playoff Set to Begin Next Week
The 32-team EuroCup playoffs are scheduled to be played Dec. 15 and Dec. 22. USAB.com will continue its EuroCup coverage with the first day of playoffs next week.

35 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field led Perfumerias Avenida (6-2) to a 77-69 win over MBA Moscow (2-6). The Spanish club also received 12 points from Katie Lou Samuelson and six points from Bella Alarie. Arriving late after helping the Chicago Sky to the WNBA title, Copper is averaging an eye-popping 31.3 ppg., 4.7 rpg. and 2.7 apg. in her three games in Avenida. 

UMMC Ekaterinburg 75, TTT Riga 60
UMMC Ekaterinburg (8-0) continued its winning ways with a 75-60 win over TTT Riga (3-5). Ekat was led in scoring by Belgium’s Emma Meeseman’s 22 points, while Brittney Griner scored two points and grabbed three boards in 13 minutes. Jasmine Tomas led Riga with 17 points and added six rebounds and four assists. 

Fenerbahce 107, Galatasaray 62
Fenerbahce (5-3) won in the battle of teams from opposing sides of the River Bosphorus, earning a 107-62 victory over Galatasaray (4-3) to take the lead in Group B. Kayla McBride turned in another powerful performance with a game-best 26 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor; while Germany’s Satou Sabally contributed 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists; and Elizabeth Williams netted all six of her field goal attempts to close with 13 points. Kaela Davis, who tallied 15 points and eight rebounds, led Gala in the loss. 

Umana Reyer 65, KSC Szekszard 51
Umana Reyer (3-5), which received 16 points from Spain’s Astou Ndour and 12 from Kayla Thornton, earned a 65-51 victory over winless KSC Szekszard (0-8). 

Dynamo Kursk 67, VBW Arka Gdynia 64
After Megan Gustafson hit a jumper at 1:16 to pull VBW Arka Gdynia (1-7) to within three points, 65-62, Arike Ogunbowale answered with a jumper for Dynamo Kursk (4-4) with 53 seconds on the clock for a 67-62 lead. Seventeen seconds later, Gustafson closed to three points again, but Gdynia would come no closer as Kursk held on for the 67-64 victory. 

Ogunbowale closed the game with 16 points, three boards, three assists and three steals; while Natasha Howard added 13 points and 12 boards for Kursk. Gustafson notched a game-high 22 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists for Gdynia. 

ZVVZ USK Prague 89, BLMA 54
Alyssa Thomas
 missed out on a triple-double by one dime after posting 18 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, while Brionna Jones contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists to power ZVVZ USK Prague (6-2) to an 89-54 win over BLMA (4-4). Haley Peters finished with a team second-best 10 points for BLMA.

Spar Girona 68, Sopron Basket 53
With its 68-53 win over Sopron Basket, Spar Girona moved to the top of the Group B standings, where four teams sit at 5-3, including Girona, Sopron, Fenerbache and Beretta Famila Schio. Sopron Basket led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, but Spar Girona outscored Sopron 26-13 in the third and 19-10 in the fourth quarter to claim the win. Kennedy Burke had 12 points and five rebounds for Spar Girona, and her American teammate Rebekah Gardner contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds. For Sopron, Gabby Williams had 15 points and six steals, and Briann January tallied 11 points.

Beretta Famila Schio 79, Basket Landes 64
Beretta Famila Schio joined four other teams at 5-3 in Group B of EuroLeague play after defeating Basket Landes (3-5) 79-64, but sits in third place in the group standings. Diamond DeShields had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for the winning side, which was led by 28 points from Belgium’s Kim Mestdagh
