Sharman White Announced as Head Coach of USA Men’s U17 World Cup Team
Sharman White (Pace Academy, Ga.) has been named head coach of the 2022 USA Basketball Men’s U17 World Cup Team, which is set to compete at the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup July 2-10 in Malaga, Spain. White will be assisted by Eric Flannery (St. Edward H.S., Ohio) and Steve Turner (Gonzaga College H.S., DC). The coaching selections were made by the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team Committee.
White, Flannery and Turner led the 2021 U16 National Team to a gold medal at the 2021 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, where the USA extended its undefeated record in U16 play to 37-0, while taking its seventh straight gold medal.
“I'm truly honored and excited to represent our country in leading the USA team into the FIBA U17 World Cup,” White said. “Having great coaching and support staffs put our team in the best position to accomplish its mission. We cannot wait to get this process started and look forward to what it means to represent our great country once again.”
Prior to convening for the FIBA U17 World Cup, the trio will serve as part of the coaching staff for the upcoming USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team minicamp in New Orleans later this month.
“I’m thrilled that Sharman, Eric and Steve will reunite to lead the 2022 USA U17 team after executing a gold medal run last summer,” said Sean Ford, committee chair and USA Basketball Men’s National Team director. “This coaching staff brings decades of basketball coaching experience to USA Basketball and graciously shares their time and expertise with the game’s young players.”
White has been involved with USA Basketball since 2014 and served as an assistant coach for the 2015 and 2019 U16 teams before taking the reigns as head coach last summer. He has worked several USA Basketball training camps and minicamps and was named head coach of the 2020 and 2021 USA Nike Hoop Summit teams before the events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Flannery and Turner are both USA Basketball coaching veterans, having been involved since 2010 and 2019, respectively.
