Sue Phillips Announced as Head Coach of USA Women’s U17 World Cup Team
Sue Phillips (Archbishop Mitty/San Jose Cagers) has been named head coach of the 2022 USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Cup Team, which is set to compete at the 2022 FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup July 9-17 in Debrecen, Hungary. Phillips will be assisted by Tom McConnell (Indiana University Pennsylvania) and Brittanny Johnson (Evanston Township H.S., Ill.). The coaching selections were made by the USA Basketball Women’s Developmental National Team Committee.
Phillips and McConnell led the 2021 U16 National Team to a gold medal at the 2021 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, where the USA won its sixth gold medal in event history and improved to 42-1 overall in tournament play.
“Representing your country with USA Basketball is an incredible honor and I look forward to working alongside Tom and Brittanny,” Phillips said. “I can’t wait to maximize the opportunity of coaching some of our country’s most talented players. Our staff will strive to bring out the best in our team as we prepare to make our mark at the FIBA U17 World Cup.”
Phillips has been involved with USA Basketball in a variety of capacities since 2009. In addition to serving as a member of the USA Basketball Women’s Developmental National Team Committee (2009-12), she has held a variety of coaching positions and led USA teams to gold at the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and the 2014 FIBA U17 World Cup.
McConnell and Johnson are both relatively new additions to the USA Basketball coaching ranks. The 2021 U17 World Cup will mark McConnell’s second coaching assignment, while Johnson previously served as a court coach at the 2021 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team trials.
“The selection committee is ecstatic to have secured an exceptional coaching staff to lead our team into the U17 World Cup,” said committee chair Kirsten Moore. “Coach Phillips has experience leading U.S. teams to success in this environment and we are thrilled to have her leadership at the helm again. Coaches McConnell and Johnson each have strengths that will add huge value to the staff, and we are confident these coaches will lead the USA U17 team to the standard of excellence for which USA Basketball is known.”
