The USA Basketball Women’s National Team completed play at the 2022 FIBA 3x3 World Cup on Saturday with a quarterfinal loss to Canada at the Groenplaats in Antwerp, Belgium.
Canada prevailed 14-10 but it was a slow offensive start for both teams. The first U.S. points came from Cierra Burdick, who finished with three one-point field goals.
The USA trailed 5-2 at the first timeout just a few minutes into the contest. However, Hailey Van Lith got going offensively and was the catalyst for a 4-1 run for the red, white and blue.
Van Lith was the leading scorer for the USA for the fourth time at the World Cup, ending the game with five points.
Minutes later, Lauren Cox tied the game at seven with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. Unfortunately, Canada hit several timely shots and held up defensively to build a 12-8 lead with 1:34 left. Van Lith hit a couple more shots but Canada was able to match and hold on for the win.
Different than five-on-five, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams “clear” the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-pointer field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.
