USA Men's U17 on to Quarterfinals After Defeating Egypt at FIBA U17 World Cup
The USA Basketball Men's U17 National Team moved one step closer to their goal on Wednesday by advancing to the quarterfinals after a 103-48 victory over Egypt at the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup at Palacio de los Deportes Elena Benítz in Malaga, Spain.
If slow and steady was the motto against Mali, fast and furious was the guide during the match against Egypt. There was no measured start this time as their longest run of the night, 16-0, spanned the first and second quarters and they posted their highest halftime score of the season, 62-23. This is the third time the U.S. has exceeded the 100-point marker in Spain, proving a formidable offensive foe.
The match proved the U.S. could capitalize not only on their opponents’ missed opportunities, but also fix their own errors in the running. The USA reached the 30-point threshold off turnovers for the third time this competition, forcing 25 by Egypt, and proceeded to add another 28 points from second-chance opportunities.
Rebounds resounded and with 68 total, the U.S. set a team record for the competition, exceeding the previous record of 66, which was previously reached on two occasions – against Argentina (6/28/16) and Philippines (8/11/14). Cooper Flagg and Karter Knox were key parts of the accomplishment with 10 and nine rebounds respectively.
The USA shot 51% overall, with an impressive 63% on two-point field goals. The team was persistent at the rim with 78 points in the paint.
A slew of great individual performances marked the night. Knox was the team leader with 18 points and just missed the double-double with his rebound effort. He also added two assists and three steals to his final tally of the evening.
An avalanche of 10-plus scorers included another three double-double close calls. Ian Jackson finished with 14 total and seven rebounds with Koa Peat close behind with 13 total points and another seven rebounds. Sean Stewart found himself with 10 points and eight rebounds. To round out the group, DJ Wagner had 12 points for the night.
Also notable, Flagg matched his blocking effort against Slovenia with four swats.
Next up for the U.S. is Serbia as they meet in the quarterfinals on Friday, July 8.
