USA Basketball Announces 2022 USA AmeriCup Coaching Staff

  • Date:
    Aug 4, 2022

USA Basketball announced today that Alex Jensen (Utah Jazz) will coach the 2022 USA Basketball AmeriCup Team, which is set to compete at the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup in September. Jensen will be assisted by Mike Williams (Capital City Go-Go) and Steve Wojciechowski.

Jensen and Wojciechowski have previous USA Basketball experience, while Williams will make his coaching debut with USA Basketball.

“Alex, Mike and Steve have extensive and diverse coaching backgrounds that will benefit our AmeriCup team as they prepare to face tough FIBA Americas competition in Brazil,” said USA Basketball Men’s National Team director Sean Ford. “Accepting a USA Basketball coaching assignment requires time, energy and expertise, and we are grateful to each of these coaches for making this commitment.”

Jensen, who has been an assistant coach with Utah since 2013-14, was a court coach at the 2018 USA Men’s National Team minicamp in advance of the 2018 FIBA World Cup. He also boasts international coaching experience, having served as an assistant with the German National Team at the 2015 EuroBasket.

Prior to joining the Jazz, Jensen was the 2013 D-League Coach of the Year for the Canton Charge and coached collegiately for four seasons at Saint Louis University (2007-2011).

Jensen enjoyed a seven-year professional career that saw him play internationally in Turkey, Spain and Japan. A standout player at the University of Utah, he helped the Utes to the 1998 NCAA National Championship where they fell to Kentucky.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to coach the 2022 USA AmeriCup Team and look forward to working with Mike and Steve as well as a talented group of players,” Jensen said. “I always enjoy my time with USA Basketball and am excited to be selected for my first head coaching assignment.”

Williams will begin his second season helming the Capital City Go-Go (NBA G League affiliate of the Washington Wizards). Last season, he led the Go-Go to a 21-10 record and the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference before losing in the second round to Raptors 905.

Williams has been part of Monumental Basketball for four seasons, also serving in player development roles for the Go-Go and Wizards. Williams previously served as a player development intern for the Portland Trail Blazers and as a student staff member at the University of Maryland.

Wojciechowski has USA Basketball experience as both a coach and a player. Prior to serving as a court coach and scout for the USA Men’s National Team from 2008-2012, he represented the USA on a pair of junior national teams. Wojciechowski won a gold medal at the 1994 COPABA Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament as a member of the USA U18 National Team before finishing seventh at the 1995 FIBA Junior World Championship as part of the U19 squad.

He most recently served as head coach at Marquette University for seven seasons, earning two NCAA tournament berths and recording an overall 124-93 record (2014-15 through 2020-21).

A Duke alumnus, Wojciechowski is ranked eighth in program history for career steals (203) and career assists (505). He enjoyed a 14-year coaching career at his alma mater with the Blue Devils winning a pair of NCAA titles in 2001 and 2010.

The 11th FIBA AmeriCup, the quadrennial FIBA Americas zone championship, will take place in Recife, Brazil, from Sept. 2-11. The AmeriCup was originally scheduled for 2021 before being rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2022 USA AmeriCup Team will be announced prior to training camp, which is set for Aug. 23-27, in Las Vegas. The USA will compete in Group C and face Mexico in their opening game on Sept. 2. For the full schedule, click here.

As defending FIBA AmeriCup champions, the USA has claimed a record seven gold medals and one silver medal since the event’s inception in 1980. In 2017, the U.S. finished with a perfect 5-0 record and a gold medal finish over Argentina.
