2022 USA Men’s AmeriCup Training Camp Participants Announced

  • Date:
    Aug 18, 2022

As the USA prepares for the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup in September, 15 athletes are expected to participate in the 2022 USA Basketball AmeriCup Team training camp from Aug. 23-27 in Las Vegas.

The camp will be led by 2022 AmeriCup head coach Alex Jensen (Utah Jazz), assistant coaches Mike Williams (Capital City Go-Go) and Steve Wojciechowski, and court coach Nathan Peavy.

Participating athletes include Zylan Cheatham, Gary Clark, Norris Cole, Derek Culver, Will Davis II, Orlando Johnson, Anthony Lamb, Frank Mason III, Patrick McCaw, Jodie Meeks, Jeremy Pargo, Elijah Pemberton, Kendall Smith, Craig Sword and Stephen Zimmerman.

“USA Basketball is looking forward to defending our 2017 FIBA AmeriCup title this fall and are thankful for this group of athletes who will come into a training camp ready to work hard,” USA Basketball men’s national team director Sean Ford said. “Our goal is to always put together a roster of athletes who are ready to play the international style of basketball at the highest level. These players have a mix of USA Basketball and professional experience that will help us achieve that goal.”

The training camp invitee list features five athletes who have prior USA Basketball experience in various capacities and 10 making their USA Basketball debuts.

Davis is the most tenured of all athletes expected in camp, most recently playing in the July 2022 World Cup Qualifying window and contributing to wins over Puerto Rico and Cuba. He also played in the February 2021 FIBA AmeriCup Qualifying window.

Johnson and Mason most recently played alongside Davis in the November 2021 World Cup Qualifying window. Zimmerman represented the USA in the February 2019 World Cup Qualifying window after previously playing with the junior national team, while Pargo was a member of the February 2020 AmeriCup qualifying team.

The 11th FIBA AmeriCup, the quadrennial FIBA Americas zone championship, will take place in Recife, Brazil, from Sept. 2-11. The AmeriCup was originally scheduled for 2021 before being rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As defending FIBA AmeriCup champions, the USA has claimed a record seven gold medals and one silver medal since the event’s inception in 1980. In 2017, the U.S. finished with a perfect 5-0 record and a gold medal finish over Argentina.

The USA will compete in Group C and face Mexico in their opening game on Sept. 2. For the full schedule, click here.
