11 Athletes Invited to USA Basketball Women’s 3x3 U23 National Team Trials

  • Date:
    Aug 5, 2022

USA Basketball announced today the participants for the 2022 USA Basketball Women’s 3x3 U23 National Team trials in Miami from Aug. 5-8. Following the completion of trials, both the men’s and women’s rosters will be named before training camp commences Aug. 9-11. The teams are slated to compete in the fifth edition of the FIBA 3x3 Nations League, starting play within the Americas conference in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, from Aug. 13-19.

The women’s national team training camp features 11 invitees who bring a combination of USA Basketball (five-on-five and 3x3) and collegiate basketball experience. The participating players are Joanne Allen-Taylor, Fran Belibi, Quay Miller, Aaliyah Moore, Shyanne Sellers, Maddy Siegrist, Celeste Taylor, Alyssa Ustby, Payton Verhulst, Kayla Wells and Maddy Westbeld.

Allen-Taylor and Wells are both members of USA Basketball’s 3x3 Women’s Series team which competes on select stops on the FIBA’s 3x3 Women’s Series. The pair were also teammates with Texafornia, the 2022 Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals champions.

Taylor and Belibi have played together with USA Basketball, having won three gold medals each at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup, 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup and 2017 FIBA U16 Americas Championship. Both Taylor (Duke University) and Belibi (Stanford University) are entering their senior years at their respective universities.

Verhulst has two gold medals of her own from the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup and 2019 FIBA U16 Americas Championship. Moore was also a member of the gold-medal-winning team at the 2019 U16 Americas Championship. Both Verhulst (University of Louisville) and Moore (University of Texas) are starting their sophomore campaigns in college.

Westbeld, who’s entering her junior year at University of Notre Dame, was a participant at the 2018 USA U17 National Team trials and most recently a finalist for the 2021 USA Basketball U19 National Team.

Making their USA Basketball debuts at trials are Sellers (University of Maryland), Siegrist (Villanova University), Ustby (University of North Carolina) and Miller (University of Colorado). Sellers will be a sophomore, Ustby will be a junior, and Siegrist and Miller will be seniors in the upcoming season.

Following training camp, six athletes will be selected to the team. The men’s roster will be announced at a later date.

Both teams will be coached by head coach Damon Huffman and court coach Lakin Roland.

Huffman will take on his first assignment as a coach with USA Basketball but holds significant experience as a 3x3 player. Since 2015 he has claimed titles at the USA Basketball 3x3 National Championships (2017, 2018) as well as the 2019 Red Bull USA Basketball 3x3 Nationals. He was also a member of two USA Basketball 3x3 World Cup teams, first in 2017 and most recently in 2019, where he won a milestone gold medal which marked the U.S. men’s first time capturing gold at a 3x3 World Cup.

Roland currently serves as an assistant coach with Dartmouth College after playing there from 2012-2016. As a player, Roland has competed at the 2016 3x3 Open National Tournament and attended the 2021 3x3 AmeriCup trials.

Launched in 2017, the FIBA 3x3 Nations League is a 3x3 national team competition for men and women under the age of 23. It offers an opportunity for future talents to hone their skills in preparation for the open category (FIBA 3x3 World Cup, Olympic Games, etc.).
