A biennial event launched in 2009 and open to athletes 16 years old or younger, the FIBA Americas U16 Championship features eight national teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. The top four finishing teams at the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship qualified for the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup. USA Basketball has claimed the gold medal in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2017, and the bronze medal in 2015, and is now 24-1 in FIBA Americas U16 Championship action. The next FIBA Americas U16 Championship will be held in 2019.
USA Basketball will again conduct open trials to select the 2017 USA U16 National Team. Trials to select finalists for the 12-member team will be held May 25-29 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
