Growing up, many athletes watch the Olympics and dream of one day competing on the world stage and winning gold medals. In 2010, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) created an opportunity for young athletes to achieve that dream, and the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) launched that year in Singapore. Following in the footsteps of its older sibling, the YOGs are held every four years and feature both summer (2022, 2026, etc.) and winter editions (2020, 2024, etc.). The next Youth Olympic Games, set to be hosted in Dakar, Senegal, were originally scheduled to be held in 2022, but have been postponed until 2026.
The basketball competition at the Youth Olympic Games is a 3-on-3 format organized by the International Olympic Committee and FIBA. Featuring athletes age 15-18, the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, featured 20 boys teams and 20 girls teams, as well as a individual contests for both men and women. In 2022 the Youth Olympics will be held in Dakar, Senegal.
