Growing up, many athletes watch the Olympics and dream of one day competing on the world stage and winning gold medals. In 2010, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) created an opportunity for young athletes to achieve that dream, and the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) launched that year in Singapore. Following in the footsteps of its older sibling, the YOGs are held every four years and feature both summer (2010, 2014, 2018, etc.) and winter editions (2012, 2016, etc.). The 2018 Youth Olympic Games will be held Oct. 6-18, 2018, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. To get there, the first step is playing in a local tournament, where winners can advance to the USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championship, which will be held March 23-25 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If there’s not a local 3x3 tournament in your area, you can go ahead and create one.
The basketball competition at the Youth Olympic Games is a 3-on-3 format organized by the International Olympic Committee and FIBA. Featuring athletes age 15-18, the 2018 Youth Olympic Games is expected to include 20 boys teams and 20 girls teams, as well as a individual contests for both men and women. It is anticipated that the 2018 YOGs will have representation from 206 different countries in 28 sports, including 3x3 basketball.
