1. What are the background check factors that would result in an applicant being ineligible to receive a USA Basketball Coach License?

A. USA Basketball reviews and compares all background screen results against the coach license criteria to determine eligibility. Those that do not meet eligibility standards will be notified through the contact information provided. USA Basketball receives monthly updates to ensure all licensed coaches maintain good standing throughout the duration of the license season. If a coach or administrator is found to be ineligible at any point during the season, their license becomes invalid. Automatic and potential disqualifying factors can be found HERE.

2. Why was my license revoked?

A. To maintain a USA Basketball Coach License, you must follow the coaches code of conduct and stay in good standing with all license requirements. Email register@usabasketball.com with additional questions.

3. Are there any additional fees for the background screen?

A. The cost of your background screen is included in your coach license fee. However, counties in the state of New York charges a fee to access your records if you live or have lived in that state. You will be charged an additional $95 per alias to retrieve your records.

Gold coach license applicants are required to also pay the pass-through fee directly to Sterling Volunteers for each alias that is checked within the county.

4. My record was expunged; can I re-apply for a background screen?

A. To complete a new screen during the current licensing season, you will have to pay for the cost of the new background screen. Please contact us directly via phone 719-590-4800 or email register@usabasketball.com to place the order.

5. I entered the incorrect information (SSN, DOB, Nickname etc.) on my background screen application, how do I place a new order?

A. Updates to an application during the current license season require you to pay for a new background screen. Please contact USA Basketball directly by phone 719-590-4800 to place a new order.

6. What if I am denied a coach license based on background check results?

A. If you are deemed ineligible for a coach license, you may request an appeal hearing from our Background Screen Panel. Appeal procedures can be found HERE.

7. What is the status of my background screen?

A. You may check the status of your screen by logging in to your account on the Sterling Volunteers website. Please allow up to 10 business days for your screen to complete.
