Age and Grade Groupings
The 2018 U.S. Open Basketball Championships will host the following age and grade groupings for boys and girls:
Divisions of Competition
Each grouping offers two divisions of play to account for varying levels of competition and ability: a Stars division and a Stripes division. Qualified teams will enter into the same division of play in which they participated in during the Official Qualifier event.
Stars division: This division is made up of established and competitive club travel teams
Stripes division: This division is made up of new and locally-based club or recreational teams
To qualify to the U.S. Open Basketball Championships, teams must participate in approved USA Basketball Official Qualifiers throughout the country. Top finishers from the 8th grade, 13U and 12U Stars and Stripes qualifying divisions in each event will earn an official bid to the championships.
Coach and Bench Personnel Eligibility
All coaches and bench personnel participating in the U.S. Open Basketball Championships must have a valid USA Basketball Coach License on file with USA Basketball prior to coaching in an Official Qualifier as well as throughout the duration of the championships. Either the gold or associate license is acceptable. To obtain a coach license, visit https://community.usab.com.
Violating the USA Basketball Coach License requirement in an Official Qualifier will result in ineligibility to coach in or sit on the bench at the championships should the team qualify.
The 2018 U.S. Open Basketball Championships for boys and girls will be played under USA Basketball tournament rules.

At least one of the 15 roster slots must be a USA Basketball licensed coach in good standing. The other 14 roster slots may be filled by a combination of players and coaches/bench personnel at the team’s discretion. All coaches and bench personnel must have a valid USA Basketball coach license on file with USA Basketball and be in good standing in order to be allowed on the bench during games.
Rosters for all teams that earn a bid at Official Qualifiers will be submitted to USA Basketball following the respective event. A maximum of three roster changes and/or additions may be submitted for the team’s roster to be used at the U.S. Open Basketball Championships. USA Basketball will review the final roster submitted to verify that the maximum number of roster changes has not been exceeded.
